Description

The propeller nebula, Simeis 57 and portions of DWB 119 and 111, was cataloged in the 150s by astronomers from the Simeiz Observatory in Ukraine. It contains an emission nebulae associated with the Cygnus X star-forming region about 4600 light-years away. Also visible is a dark molecular cloud called the Cygnus Rift that is about 300 light years away. The massive amount of dust and plasma that Cygnus Rift contains absorbs most of the light coming from stars and other objects behind it.
